Floral Deconstruction – Inspire, Amaze and bring Wildflowers to Life
Floral Deconstruction is a “Growing Archive of Native Wildflowers”. It is also a handling collection –
Over the last few years I have been deconstructing and examining native wildflowers using a USB microscope before replicating each individual part of the flower in detail in 3d on a much larger scale. The collection now consists of seven wildflowers made during their flowering season from the first snowdrops of February to the Foxgloves in June. Thanks to funding from Ernest Cook Trust the handling collection is now housed in handmade wooden boxes. We have also been able to set Floral Deconstruction up as a touring “Creative Lab” with a projector and screen so that visitors can be as inspired and amazed as we are by the close up detail of wildflowers under the USB microscope.

This June we ran a two week residency in Ruthin Craft Centre to link in with their exhibition “Flora” where we set up our pop up creative lab and worked on foxglove flower parts, we then moved the lab to World Museum Liverpool to link in with their botanical collection where we continued to work on foxglove, we ran drop in workshops for visitors at both venues and had some volunteers working with us too.
Informed by the workshop sessions we are now working on interpretation for the boxes and linked resource for teachers.
Over the next few years we plan to continue building up the collection adding a new flower during its flowering season each year.
We are looking for host venues such as museums, galleries and botanical gardens to set up our Creative Lab where we will work on new wildflowers, run drop in and school workshops, work with volunteers and show visitors around our pop up laboratory.
